Do dogs and cats dream? Science suggests the answer is a resounding yes — and their dream world may not be so different from ours.
Like humans, dogs and cats experience several stages of sleep, including REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement), the phase most closely linked to dreaming. During REM, the brain is highly active, and this is when you might notice your pet’s whiskers twitching, paws moving, or soft whimpers and purrs escaping. These movements are signs that their brain is replaying experiences, possibly chasing a ball, stalking a toy, or reliving moments with you.
Studies on animal sleep patterns show that both species have brainwave activity during REM similar to humans. In fact, research on rats demonstrated that they replay maze experiences in their dreams, strongly suggesting that more complex animals like dogs and cats also process daily life in their sleep.
Dreaming plays an important role in memory, learning, and emotional processing. For pets, it may help them store training commands, remember new places, or strengthen their bond with their humans.
If you see your dog or cat “running” in their sleep, it’s best to let them be. Waking a dreaming pet can cause confusion or even anxiety. Instead, take comfort in knowing they’re not just resting — they’re enjoying a rich inner life, one filled with the scents, sights, and adventures of their day.
