Helping Pets Cope with Stress: Tips for a Calmer Home

Just like humans, dogs and cats can experience stress — and it can affect their behaviour, health, and overall happiness. Recognising the signs early and taking steps to create a calm environment can make a big difference for your pet’s wellbeing.

Know the signs: Stressed pets may pace, hide, vocalise more than usual, groom excessively, or show changes in appetite. In dogs, you might also see yawning, lip licking, or pinned-back ears. Cats may flatten their ears, lash their tails, or avoid interaction.

Create a safe space: Give your pet a quiet area where they can retreat, away from noise and busy activity. A cosy bed, blanket, or crate (for dogs) can offer comfort. Cats often appreciate high perches or enclosed spots where they feel secure.

Maintain routines: Pets thrive on predictability. Feeding, playtime, and walks at regular times help reduce anxiety because your pet knows what to expect.

Enrichment matters: Boredom can fuel stress. Engage your pet with toys, puzzle feeders, scent games, or short training sessions to keep their mind active.

Stay calm yourself: Pets are sensitive to human emotions. Speaking softly, moving gently, and avoiding sudden loud noises can reassure them.

If stress persists or worsens, consult your vet. Sometimes anxiety has a medical cause, or your pet might benefit from professional behaviour support. By understanding their needs and providing comfort, you can help your furry friend feel more at ease — and build a happier, more peaceful home together.
